Community-Driven Digital Public Goods: Learnings from a Decade of Partnerships
The rise of the “invest in open” movement has led to an increased focus on open-source toolkits as a way of democratizing access to software that is typically expensive and therefore restricted. While initially viewed as a byproduct of the “Data for Good” movement, digital public goods have increasingly become a key deliverable of actors looking to have a positive impact. DataKind, a global nonprofit focused on using data science in the service of humanity, has partnered with social impact organizations to evolve data solutions into turnkey tools that are accessible and valuable public goods. This session will serve as a reflection on the open-source movement and the potential to deliver impact within the social sector. DataKind and project partners will share experiences and lessons learned from the ongoing creation and stewardship of four digital public goods. They will offer a commentary on how open-source tool development can drive new impact and potential pathways for engagement.
